Lavalais was last seen in Hankamer, Texas on July 5, 1997 around 10:00PM, walking down Speights Road. Her father had dropped her off at an area there known as "the cuts," where area residents gathered to socialize. Lavalais lived with her common-law husband and two grandchildren at the time of her disappearance. Foul play is suspected.
