On October 9, 1968, Richard Oldfield was reported overdue from a solo hike in Kings Canyon National Park by his wife. His intended route included entering Kings Canyon via Kearsarge Pass, continuing to Dragon Lake, then to Gardiner Basin, and then exiting the park via Kearsarge Pass. Mr. Oldfield appeared to have signed summit register logbooks at Kearsarge Pass and Mt. Gould on October 5, 1968. On October 10, 1968, searchers followed a pair of Vibram shoe impressions from Mt. Gould to Dragon Lake where the tracks were ultimately lost. Snow and precipitation hampered search efforts for 3 days. Search was suspended on October 29, 1968. No other clues have been found.
