On May 6, 2022, Kainalu Higbee argued with his wife at their Paia home. He was then asked to stay with his mother in Lahaina. He left in his white Toyota Tacoma (HI plate LKA 038). Kainalu stayed at his mother's home in Lahaina until May 7 at 11:30 PM, when he left. He abandoned his cell phone and drove away. Between May 8–12, his unattended truck was found a few blocks from his mother's residence and eventually towed away. There was a "free" cardboard cut out left on the front grill. An All-Points Bulletin was issued. Higbee has not been seen or heard from since.
