Robert Arvin set sail from Sand Island with the intention of sailing to San Diego, California on his 30' sailboat. On 9-14-2008, a Matson container ship reported seeing Arvin's boat at sea. Per the Matson crew, as Arvin's boat passed by, a male was onboard waving, and did not appear to be in distress. Arvin has not been seen or heard from since.
