Media reports that Dwight Florin (MP #67237) and Kaino Dixon were crewmen on the fishing vessel, Cougar. They left the Cougar in a 12' aluminum fishing skiff, Dawn, late on Thursday, 11/12/1981 to hunt on Kodiak Island. The men apparently were stranded by increasingly bad weather which churned up to 6-8' breakers near the beach. As night fell, they flashed an SOS to the Cougar and later fired a distress flare. Then later, they fired a non-distress flare. Crewmen from the fishing vessel tried to reach the island Thursday night but were turned back by rough seas. When the crewmen finally reached shore on Friday, 11/13/1981, they found no sign of the men or the skiff. Both men are presumed deceased.
