On November 22, 1967, Mr. Richard Henry Waters was last seen on a hiking trail in the Mt. Bachelor wilderness area by his wife, who had separated from Mr. Waters on the trail to head back to their car to determine if it was locked. Mrs. Waters traveled back up the trail, but never found her husband or their family dog, who was accompanying them. She went back to their vehicle, drove down the mountain road and summoned assistance from law enforcement officials. Extensive search teams were deployed during the next few days; no sign of Mr. Waters was ever found. The family dog was found alive 2 days later, approximately 1 mile away from the point of last contact.
