On March 28th or 29th, 1982, Smith's reportedly was dropped off by family to the Indianapolis bus terminal headed for Knoxville, TN. That was the last time Smith had any contact with his family. Prior to leaving, he told family he was headed for a trucking job but investigations would later reveal no such trucking firm in Knoxville and no trace of Smith.
