Alicia's birth mother, who had been allowed visitation, showed up at the party and requested some alone time with Alicia. The foster mother allowed this, but when she arrived at the birth mother's apartment in Fairfield to pick up Alicia as arranged, individuals at the residence said the birth mother no longer lived there and had moved to Mexico with Alicia. Investigative follow-up revealed that in the weeks prior to the abduction the birth mother had expressed the desire to return to Mexico with Alicia and had saved money for the trip.
