Howard Lee Simmons was last seen on April 16, 1981 at his home in Modesto, California. Simmons had told his wife that he wasn't feeling well and wanted to go to the Veteran's Hospital in Livermore, California. Simmons left his residence in his brown 1974 AMC Gremlin with a California license plate and has never been seen again. The vehicle was recovered in Livermore on May 4, 1981. His family believes he may have been a victim of foul play.
