On 24 Jun 2023, Gaunt went on a charter dive trip in Pompano Beach, FL. He utilized his own equipment and was dropped off alone at his dive spot. At 0830 hours, when the other divers returned to the boat, Gaunt did not resurface. Divers searched around his dive spot but were unable to locate Gaunt. The Coast Guard also launched a search and only located a single flipper.
