"On June 4, 2017 officers from the Smyth County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries began working a missing person case on the Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Concerned citizens reported that a Toyota pickup truck was located at a gate near the top of the mountain in the management area, running with no one around. A Conservation Officer responded and called for a Sheriff's office K-9. A search of the area was initiated as well as an investigation as to the owner of the vehicle. It was found that the truck belonged to Gary Shannon Earp of Tazewell County. Mr. Earp's family was contacted and advised they had not heard from him since Thursday evening. It is believed that Mr. Earp's welfare could be in jeopardy, due to medical conditions." - Smyth County Sheriff's Office. 2017.
