After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and later served in the Philippines. When his service ended, he returned to New Bedford. He worked for a time assisting his uncle who was a horse trainer. Ricky was last seen in the Fall of 1978 when he was 22 years old. He was a light/medium complexioned Cape Verdean/African American man with brown hair and brown/hazel eyes. He was 6’ 2” tall with an athletic build and weighed approximately 190 lbs. He also had a scar on his left cheek and on his stomach.
