On Monday, October 22nd, 2018, James Eugene Dowden was reported as missing by his mother. Dowden's mother reported James missing after not having heard from him in several weeks. The investigation revealed information which suggested James was last seen with his son in the area of the Honey Island Swamp in the early morning hours of September 4th, 2018. Dowden's son claimed the two were mud riding, and got stuck in the swamp. James was said to have walked away to get help, but never returned.
