Tom was employed for the summer with the National Forestry Service at the forest ranger station near Troy, MT. Tom and a couple friends from the station were floating down the Kootenai River in innertubes between Troy and Libby. They hit rough water and Tom was flipped out of his innertube. The others were unable to reach him. They saw him come to the surface twice and then disappear. Searches of the area were unable to locate him.
