On December 6, 2017, Hermann Samitsch departed Marathon, FL (Boot Key Harbor) on board a 1972, 39', Pearson sailboat (SV), said to be en route to Panama. The SV's engine was not operable and had minimal navigation electronics. It was reported Hermann intended to sail solo and visit his family who resided in Panama. He was due to arrive before Christmas 2017. According to his family, Hermann did not arrive and he was reported as missing to Panamanian authorities.
