Michael was attempting to swim from the Adams Canal near the Niagara Falls Wastewater treatment facility at 1201 Buffalo Ave to the Ontario Hydro Project which is north of that location. His girlfriend Helene Spina was on the shore watching him swim, and when he was approximately 50 yards off shore she lost sight of him. Michael did not surface again, and she contacted the police to report the incident.
