After a day on the lake, he wandered away from family members at the Grayson Lake Marina parking lot area at about 6:30 pm. Rich was at the playground with his wife, and grandchildren. He began walking back towards the marina, his wife and grandchildren following behind. He was a little bit ahead of them and walked towards the bathroom. His wife and son walked up to the bathroom to check on him, but Rich was not in the bathroom. Within 10 minutes of him walking in that direction, family and DNR officers were searching the area for him. Additional officers from Carter Co. Sheriff's office and Kentucky State Police arrived within the hour and began searching as well. An Emergency Response Team was on site that evening and searched into the early morning hours. They continued the search the rest of that week using dogs, foot teams, UTV's, sonar, divers and helicopters. Additional search teams canvased the area in the following weeks. Area hospitals and homeless shelters have been contacted. Local news stations have been running the story. Flyers have been put up in the surrounding areas as well as shared through social media.
