Mr. Kampf left his residence in Oaklyn, New Jersey, on July 6, 1981, en-route to Vancouver, Canada. He drove his 1980 brick/brown Chevrolet pickup truck on this excursion. Kampf's family received correspondence and a telephone calls from him until about July 11, 1981. At last contact with his family he was in Washington state and planned to enter Canada. Soon after some of Kampf’s traveler’s checks were cashed at a British Columbia bank. However on July 27, 1981, a male posing as Kampf and operating Kampf's vehicle was involved in a minor motor vehicle accident in Idaho. During August, 1981, Kampf’s other traveler’s checks were cashed in both North and South Dakota by someone other than Kampf. In October, 1981, Kampf's pickup truck was found by hunters down a ravine in Montana.
